Just My Rant

I am going to ‘change it up’ a bit, removing the negative and adding a major positive to my blog this week for I have tonight realized a dream 17 years in the making, a Stanley Cup playoff between the two teams I have admired since 1990. Most people that know me know I am an avid sports hater, you literally couldn’t pay me to sit down and watch a football, baseball or basketball game but when it comes to hockey and the playoffs I am a raving lunatic. We have a saying in this house about sports “Baseball is for weenies that can’t play basketball, basketball is for pussies that can’t play football and football is for faggots that can’t play hockey!” We also have an ongoing love of two teams, the western conference Detroit Red Wings and the eastern conference Pittsburgh Penguins. Actually my son, another rabid hockey lunatic only likes the Penguins but we love him just the same ;-)

This entire playoff season we hoped and watched, both teams looked unstoppable in their divisions. The Penguins ate challengers up one after another as the Red Wings did the same out west. Finally Sunday afternoon the Penguins planted the last ‘nail in the coffin’ by humiliating the Flyers in a 6-0 spanking. My Red Wings seemed to have stumbled, allowing the Dallas Star 2 wins after beating them 3 games in a row. Needless to say I was afraid Detroit would once again choke in the playoffs and let me down.

Well the Red Wings must have watched the Penguins game Sunday and been inspired (or humiliated they couldn’t do that) because they came out of the gate last night in game 6 like a hellion! My Wings were back in the saddle and playing like the team I know and love. When all was said and done the Stars went down in almost the same dramatic fashion the Flyers did in a 4-1 loss. At that moment a 17 year dream has finally come true, BOTH my teams are in the Stanley cup finals.

But like as the old saying goes “be careful what you wish for” I am now in a major predicament, who the hell do you root for when you love both teams? My one friend John (another major hockey fan) told me he will be laughing his ass off every time either team scores a goal in the finals because he knows I will be sitting here wondering if I should cheer or boo and to be very honest I have no idea how I am going to handle this but I do know one thing, ONE of my teams will be holding up the cup in the very new future and secondly, this is going to be the most amazing Stanley Cup finals the NHL has seen in a long LONG time. Only thing that could make this better is tickets to a game but I know damn well that isn’t happening.

So now I can die a happy man but NOT before this Stanley Cup finals are over, if you know me and need to get hold of me anytime from next Saturday on make sure to check the playoff schedule before you call .. unless you are telling me you found tickets to one of the games I won’t even answer the phone!

All I can say is GO Pens, oh shit wait, I mean Go Wings, no wait, GO Pens .. ah hell I meant GO Wings … ah hell I don’t know what I mean.
