Arlen Spector Steps Up To The Plate For YOUR Freedom!
June 9th, 2007It’s not too often I agree with Senator Arlen Spector, especially since he is the senator for my area but this week he made a major stride forward to protect the freedom of all Americans and towards the protection of the rights our forefathers fought and died for.
Spector’s bill, the Habeas Corpus Restoration Act of 2007, passed committee this week by a vote of 11 to 8 (and who are the 8 Nazis that voted against it?), assuring this bill will move to the full house and senate within weeks. Once passed this bill will restore what the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights guaranteed to all Americans, reversing the power grab, fascist Military Commissions Act that was passed by the Republican controlled congress last year.
If you don’t know why this is important to EVERY American it’s time to get your head out of your ass and understand how our system of justice works! Without Habeas Corpus ALL of your other rights are worthless as tits on a frog! Habeas Corpus guarantees anyone accused of a crime the right to speedy trial and to be able to challenge your accusers in open court. Described by constitutional law scholar Jonathan Turley “habeas corpus is not a dangerous luxury or some sort of lawyer’s trick to get crooks out of jail, but “is actually the foundation for all other rights. When the government throws you into a dungeon for what you say or who you pray to, it’s habeas corpus that’s the right that allows you to see the enforcement of the other rights.”
And if you think the repeal of Habeas Corpus was needed to ‘take on the terrorists Mr. Turley goes on to say: “suspending habeas corpus has actually made us less safe: “The greatest irony of the Bush administration is that his legacy will be to show the dangers of walking away from those rights that define us. We’re very much alone today. … We’re viewed as a rogue nation. And it is a dangerous world to live in when you’re alone.”
So send a big thanks to one senator that had the guts to tell Bush to go fuck himself. Even though Arlen Spector voted for the Military Commissions Act (after a speech where he said it was a ‘dark day for Americans), he has come back to set things right and for the first time in a LONG time I am DAMN proud of my senator and you should be too!
